The foundational Yoga Sutras are the way we pull the vast array of available Yogic tools together into a comprehensive plan for realizing our potential. Within these wisdom teachings is an outline of how to practice. It is called Astanga Yoga or the eight limbs. It leads one to the state of Yoga, fully connected to your highest source of wisdom and able to take action from that awareness. To begin our journey into this incredible system, an understanding of the first two limbs, Yamas and Niyamas, is helpful.
The Yamas are a set of principals or attitudes that focus outwardly on social conduct. These behaviors encourage positive action in the world to which, if applied, will prevent us from planting future seeds that lead to further suffering for others and ourselves. The Niyamas are applications of similar principals but applied inwardly to ourselves, including self-discipline. These inward practices are necessary for success on the Yogic path and for life in general.
Please join me for a wonderful 10 – week discourse of the practical application of the Yamas and Niyamas, including Yoga Asana practice, journaling and discussion. Classes begin January 18th. Pre-registration is required for the 10-week course and will be held on Fridays from 12:00 – 2:00 pm.
Please wear comfortable clothes and please bring a notebook for journaling. The suggested reading of Practical Steps Toward Living the Yamas and Niyamas by Karen Weber will be available for sale at Prana Yoga Center for $20.
